They couldn't escape the OutKast hitHey you!back in 2003 and 2004.
It was absolutely everywhere. And not just in the US, but overseas as well.
Everyone danced along happily when it hit a club.
And many sang along, at least the chorus and the few other lines they could understand.
But what virtually nobody knew was that the song had a secret.
A much darker and sadder meaning that the happy rhythm and melody suggest.
Read on to find out exactly what Andre 3000 actually sang about in his megahitHey you!

Hey youlyrics and meaning
In September 2003 Outkast released one of their most famous songs:Hey you!The song was one of the most successful of the decade, spending several weeks at the top of the Billboard chart and earning a Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance.
Outkast is an American duo that mixes many styles in their musical shaker: hip-hop, rap, rhythm and blues, soul, pop, funk and more. Its members are André 3000 and Big Boi.
In 2003 they released an album that is still considered one of the best of the millennium. It's called Speakerboxxx/The Love Below and has the particularity of being a double album, one containing André 3000 (Speakerboxxx) and the other Big Boi (The Love Below).
Big Boi focused on beats and rhymes from the American South, while Andre 3000 infused a lot more jazz and funk. André 3000 composed the songHey you!
Hey you! is an enormously rhythmic, fresh, lively, funny, catchy and of course danceable song. Very danceable.
It's a song with a multitude of nuances, rhythms, counterrhythms, choirs, voice acting, harmonies and choruses, all put together perfectly. It's certainly a kaleidoscopic song and one of the best of the last decade.
It's really difficult to label as it has influences from pop, rock, funk, soul, gospel and more: a true melting pot.
In fact, a trade magazine once said that trying to classify this song is like trying to catch water with a rope. Journalism needs musical labels in order to be able to offer references.
However you classify it, the bottom line is: many find it a great song and it will never lose its validity.
Hey you! Text
One, two, three, uh
My baby doesn't play around
Because she loves me so much
And I know that, fo sho (uh)
But does she really want that?
But you can't stand to see me walk out the door? (Ah)
Don't try to fight the feeling
'Cause just the thought is killing me right now (uh)
Thank god for mom and dad
For gluing two together
'Cause we don't know how (come on)
Hey now! Hey now!
Hey now! Hey now!
Hey now! Hey now!
Hey now! Hey now!
you think you got it
Oh you think you got it
But get it, just don't get it until there's nothing at all
We come together
Ah, we come together
But apart is always better when feelings are involved
If what they say is
"Nothing is forever"
Then what makes, then what makes
Then what makes, then what makes (what makes, what makes)
Do you love the exception?
So why oh why oh
Why oh why oh why oh
Do we deny so much when we know we're not happy here?
(You all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance)
Hey now! (Oh oh) Hey yeah! (Oh oh)
Don't want to meet your daddy
Hey now! (Oh oh)
I just want you in my caddy (uh oh)
Hey now! (Oh oh)
I don't want to meet your mom
Hey now! (Oh oh)
I just wanna make you cum (uh oh)
Hey now! (Oh oh)
I am, I am, I'm just being honest (Uh oh)
I'm just being honest
Hey! Now well
Okay, Jungs (Yeah?)
Well, what's cooler than being cool? (Freezing!)
I can not hear you
I say what's cooler than being cool? (Freezing!)
Alright, alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Okay now ladies (yeah?)
Now we're going to break this thing down in just a few seconds
Well, don't make me break this for nothing
Now I want to see you at your worst behavior
Borrow me some sugar, I'm your neighbor
Ah! Here we go
Shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake (Uh oh)
Shake, shake, shake, shake, shake (Uh oh)
Shake it like a Polaroid, hey ya!
Shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
Shake it, shake it, shake it, sugar
Shake it like a polaroid picture
Well, everything from Beyonce and Lucy Liu
And baby dolls
get on the floor
Get on the floor, you know what to do
You know what to do
You know what to do
Hey now! (Oh oh) Hey yeah! (Oh oh)
Hey now! (Oh oh) Hey yeah! (Oh oh)
Hey now! (Oh oh) Hey yeah! (Oh oh)
Hey now! (Oh oh) Hey yeah! (Oh oh)
Hey you! meaning
Let's start with the video you can see above. It honors the song. It's very well done and very funny.
Importance of music video
It was inspired by the Beatles' first performance in the United States, specifically in 1964 on the TV show The Ed Sullivan Show, with all the madness and collective hysteria that even left some fainting (mostly, if not all women).
Note that André 3000 has multiple nicknames and plays all of the band's characters in this video.
Specifically, it represents 8 versions of itself. This is called multiple personalities. Considering how the video looks and how the song sounds, they go hand in hand quite nicely.
As a final curiosity, we'd like to mention that the song popularized the phrase "shake it like a Polaroid picture" in American culture. This phrase was used by the Polaroid company to reactivate their image.
From here we can get a double reading. There are certain classic things that are always striking and contemporary. On the contrary, there are other very popular things that are quickly going out of style.
The latter is quite common, the former rather rare. There aren't that many examples. And perhaps the greatest provider of such examples is music.
Oh yes, there are plenty of examples of classic songs that have stood the test of time. Hey you! there will of course be another one. In fact, it's probably old enough now that it already is!
lyrics meaning
Despite the optimism and joy one feels upon hearing this tune, a revelation from the singer changes everything. It turns out that in the lyrics of Hey Ya! there is deep sadness.
Everyone always sings (or shouts) the emblematic words "Hey yaaaaaa", "Shake it like a Polaroid picture" or the essential "Alright alright alright alright alright alright".
But if they listened to the lyrics a little more closely, they might realize that the song actually has a very different meaning. One that's a lot less fun.
Although Hey Ya! sounds like an extremely positive and upbeat song, the truth is that it's the story of a relationship that's not going very well.
"My baby doesn't play around because she loves me so and I know it fo sho!". (My girl is not cheating on me because she loves me very much, I know that for sure).
But then he continues, "But does she really want to, but she can't take to see me walk out the door?" There she hints that she may not be happy in the relationship.
Then add the phrase, "Thank god mom and dad stuck two together because we don't know how."
Later, 3000 elaborates on the status of the relationship: "We're getting together, oh, we're getting together. But separate is always better when feelings are involved.”
Then an additional sentence: "If they say 'Nothing lasts forever', then what makes love exceptional?"
Then comes a haunting sentence: “Why, oh, why, oh, why, oh. Do we deny it so much when we know we are not happy here?”
A song with a reflection on love and relationships that we might not have noticed. Andre 3000 actually wrote this about modern day relationships and how messed up they are.
At the beginning of his song, he even references his own relationship when he talks about how his other half doesn't want to leave him, but he doesn't really know why.
In the end it even refers to the fact that people will definitely perceive it as a happy song and won't think about the deeper meaning behind it. He says literally: "You don't want to listen to me, you just want to dance".
One fan even made a piano cover of it, revealing how sad the song sounds when sung differently. A social media user responded to OutKast's tweet (which explained the meaning of the song) by noting that he had just seen that there was an open coffin in the music video.
"It took me 15 years to realize there was an open coffin in the middle of the stage the whole time," he says. Of course, this small detail in the video symbolizes the death of love that Andre 3000 experiences.
